Uh Oh, I Dropped My Phone in Water! What to Do When Your Device Takes a Dive

• Ana Bruja - Khayos

That moment of panic is universal: your phone slips from your hand and makes a splash, whether in a toilet, a sink, or even a puddle. Your heart sinks right along with it.

At Dr. Phonez @ The Forum, we see dozens of water-damaged devices every year. While every situation is different, your actions in the first few minutes after the accident are critical. Here’s exactly what you need to do, and what you absolutely must avoid, to give your device the best chance of survival.

Do This Immediately (And Fast!)

1. Power It Down.

This is the single most important step. Don't check to see if it's working. Don't answer a call. Don't open an app. Immediately turn off your device. If it’s still on, electricity is flowing through the circuits, which can cause them to short and corrode much faster. The faster you kill the power, the less damage the water can do.

2. Dry the Exterior.

Grab a paper towel or a soft cloth and wipe down the outside of your device thoroughly. Pay special attention to ports, speaker grilles, and any buttons. The goal is to prevent any more liquid from getting inside.

3. Remove What You Can.

If you have a phone with a removable battery, take it out immediately (though this is rare with most modern smartphones). Also, remove the SIM card, microSD card, and any case or cover. This helps open up spaces for the device to dry and prevents moisture from getting trapped.

4. Keep it Still.

Resist the urge to shake your device. Shaking it can cause the liquid to spread to other internal components that might have been dry. Place it on a flat, dry surface and let gravity do its job.

What NOT to Do (Seriously, Don’t!)

1. Don't Put It in Rice.

This is the most common myth we hear, and it's a terrible idea. Rice doesn't effectively absorb moisture from the inside of a device. Instead, it can get tiny particles of dust and starch stuck in the ports, making things worse and complicating a professional repair.

2. Don't Use a Hair Dryer or Heat.

Applying heat can damage internal components, melt delicate plastic parts, and push liquid further into the device. It might seem like a good idea to "dry it out," but you’ll do more harm than good.

3. Don't Charge It.

Do not, under any circumstances, plug in your device to see if it works. This can cause a serious electrical short that can fry the motherboard and other crucial components, making the device unfixable.

4. Don't Assume It’s Fine.

Even if your device seems to be working after drying it out, water damage can cause slow, corrosive damage that appears days or weeks later. It's best to have a professional check it out.
