Keep the Juice Flowing: 5 Simple Habits to Extend Your Phone's Battery Life

Ana Bruja - Khayos

Ever feel like your phone's battery life is a ticking time bomb? One minute it’s at 80%, and the next, it's begging for a charger. While we can't stop the natural aging process of your battery, we can show you some simple habits that will dramatically extend its daily life and keep it healthy for the long run.

At Dr. Phonez @ The Froum, we see a lot of phones with battery issues. Often, a few easy changes can make a world of difference. Here are our top 5 tips to get the most out of your battery, starting today.

1. Adjust Your Screen Brightness

Your phone’s screen is the single biggest consumer of battery power. A brighter screen uses significantly more energy than a dim one.

Habit: Turn on Auto-Brightness in your settings. Your phone's ambient light sensor will automatically adjust the screen brightness based on your surroundings. When you’re inside, it will dim, saving a ton of power. You can also manually lower the brightness whenever you can comfortably see the screen.

2. Don't Let Apps Run Wild in the Background

Apps like social media, news, and navigation often continue to run in the background, constantly refreshing content and using up battery, even when you’re not using them.

Habit: Go into your phone’s settings and turn off Background App Refresh for any apps you don't need to be constantly updated. For example, do you really need your email app to refresh every minute? Probably not. You can also manually close apps that are draining a lot of power.

3. Use Dark Mode

This is a simple change with a big impact, especially if your phone has an OLED screen (like most modern iPhones and high-end Androids). OLED screens light up individual pixels. When a pixel displays black, it's actually off, meaning it uses no power at all.

Habit: Turn on Dark Mode for your phone's operating system and all your apps. It will not only be easier on your eyes in low light but will also help your battery last noticeably longer.

4. Optimize Your Location Services

GPS is a major battery drain. Many apps, from ride-sharing to weather, constantly use your location in the background.

Habit: Review which apps have access to your location. Go into your settings and change location permissions to "While Using the App" or "Ask Next Time" instead of "Always." This ensures the GPS is only active when you are actively using the app.

5. Be Mindful of Charging Habits

How you charge your phone matters more than you think. Constantly leaving your phone plugged in at 100% or letting it completely die can be stressful for the battery over time.

Habit: Try to keep your phone's battery level between 20% and 80% as much as possible. This range is the sweet spot for battery health. Avoid leaving it on the charger overnight. Instead, charge it for a couple of hours in the morning or evening when you can unplug it at around 80%.

By adopting these five simple habits, you can stop watching your battery life drain away and start enjoying your device for longer throughout the day. And if you’ve tried all this and your battery is still failing, it might be time for a professional replacement.
